Samsung Unveils Galaxy XR, Revolutionizing Mobile AI

The future of mobile technology has taken a significant leap forward with the introduction of Samsung’s Galaxy XR, a device that embodies the perfect blend of artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR). This move reflects broader industry trends towards creating more immersive and interactive experiences for users. As Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, notes, “With Galaxy XR, Samsung is introducing a brand-new ecosystem of mobile devices.”

Galaxy XR is the first product built on the new Android XR platform, developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm Technologies. This platform is designed to deliver natural and intuitive interactions through voice, vision, and gesture, making it feel like a personal AI companion rather than just a device. The integration of Gemini, an AI technology, at the system level enables Galaxy XR to understand users’ surroundings and respond in conversational ways that feel natural and human.

The device’s design is centered around comfort and usability, with a human-centric approach that ensures long-term wearability. The headset’s ergonomically balanced frame distributes pressure evenly, minimizing facial discomfort, while the separate battery pack makes the device more compact and lightweight. Galaxy XR also features a detachable light shield, offering comfort when removed and deeper immersion when attached.

One of the key features of Galaxy XR is its ability to unlock new dimensions of discovery, providing a wide array of experiences optimized for XR. Users can explore virtual and real worlds in XR-specialized apps, using natural physical interactions with assistance from Gemini. For instance, with Google Maps, users can navigate to any place and ask for personalized suggestions about nearby locations while exploring immersive 3D maps.

Galaxy XR is powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform, delivering next-generation immersive experiences with visual clarity and advanced AI through the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. The device also features a 4K Micro-OLED screen, advanced sensors, and powerful hardware, making it ideal for entertainment, including sports and gaming. With up to 2.5 hours of battery usage time, users can enjoy their favorite content in total, uninterrupted immersion.

As part of its broader XR roadmap, Samsung is committed to meeting a wide range of use cases, including enterprise needs such as virtual training in heavy industry and construction. The company has partnered with Samsung Heavy Industries to utilize Galaxy XR for virtual shipbuilding training, and with Qualcomm Technologies to tap into an Enterprise ISV ecosystem, giving developers the tools to bring their applications to Galaxy XR.

Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, emphasizes the significance of this launch, stating, “Android XR is the first Android platform built entirely for the Gemini era, and we are incredibly excited to take a significant leap forward today with the launch of Galaxy XR.” Alex Katouzian, Group GM of Mobile, Compute & XR at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., adds, “Galaxy XR embodies our vision for the future, where the synergy of AI and XR transforms the possibilities of personal computing.”

Galaxy XR will be available starting October 21 in the USA and October 22 in Korea. For more information, please visit the Samsung Newsroom.
